EVALUATION TASK 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Below are the 9 Key Shots taken from our final edit. These include:

  • The title of the film
  • The setting
  • Costumes
  • Camera work and editing
  • Font and style
  • Story/narrative
  • Genre and suggestions of it
  • Characters
  • Special FX

Title: I have chosen this screenshot as it is our main title. We have chosen to use a still background image as we like to use it as a slight transition between the flash-forward and the actual title sequence. We have used a rustic wall as the background image as it relates nicely to our chosen idea of music coming from the streets.

The Setting: The Setting we have chosen was mainly on top of a multi-storey car park in Elgin. We chose this setting as we liked the lighting. We used this establishing pan shot to show the area in which the story was set- inner city- and we used the ledge on the front to get in a title.

Costume: I have chosen this screenshot as it represents well our costume we used for our Homeless character. We used a large blanket, some fingerless gloves, a McDonalds cup, a cardboard rectangle and a wooly hat to get across the point that it is cold, and this man is homeless in need of money. We took advantage of the board being there and used it to show one of our titles with costume. We chose to put the Costume title in this scene as again we thought it was a good place to show off our costume.

Camera Work and Editing: Camera Work and Editing was used to overlay this shot of the Posh Boy closing the window with money. At this point, there is a voice over mentioning how people believe money is the root of happiness. We used the overlay of money to emphasise the idea that this is all most people think about. In this shot, we have also adjusted the titles to fit in the board on the left hand side.

Font and Style: This screenshot shows our homeless character playing guitar with beams of light streaking down above him. We have also placed the title ‘Directed By’ in this shot on the wall as we think it is relating to the main title where it is on a rugged looking wall. We have used this sketchbook-like style to link with our idea of a sketch-book opening, as discussed in my ‘Changes’ Post.

Story/Narrative: This screenshot shows the two boys meeting for the first time. It shows that they are quite obviously connecting as the Posh boy has decided to put some money in the homeless boys cup. This is the first time we see the two boys together and therefore I think that this represents the start of the story well and that it acts as a doorway into our story.

Genre and Suggestions of it: I chose this screenshot as I believe that independent films tend to be professional, but also sometimes have a few unprofessional shots. We used this handheld shot as it sort of shows that it is not a Headline Blockbuster. However, we also believe that this shot could potentially spark the idea of an independent film, as we discovered when we showed it to some of our audiences.

Characters: I chose this screenshot as it shows both of the characters connecting. We can see them both looking at eachother and we can also see the contrast between the two of them. We can see that one of them is dressed well and the other is homeless. This is a good introduction into the two main characters, and we think that it shows them both clearly.

Special FX: I chose this screenshot as I used the overlay to show a flash-forward. This is a use of editing which can show the current story and also the future too. I thought that this can be related to the openings of many movies, where they use a flash forward to draw the audience into the happenings of the story, and then cut off with the main title and give a cliff-hanger effect.
